A Comparison of the Relationship between the Golden Ratio and Anatomical Characteristics of the Supraorbital Foramen in Bare Skulls Belonging to the Byzantine Era and Modern Era International Journal of Morphology
Bakirci,S; Kafa,I. M; Coskun,I; Buyukuysal,M. C; Barut,C.
The aim of the present study is to determine the frequency of the occurrence of supraorbital foramen/notch (SOF/N) in the skulls of the people who lived in the modern era and the late Byzantine era, to determine the symmetry and the asymmetry between the two halves of the skulls by measuring the linear distance to various landmarks, to check the consistency between the location of the SOF/N and the golden ratio by calculating the ratio between linear distances and to evaluate the differences between the skulls from both historical periods. In the study, the frequency of the occurrence of the supraorbital notch in the skulls from the Byzantine era was found to be 26.60 % on the right and 13.30 % on the left while it was 14.30 % on the right and 9.52 % on...

A Complex Variation of the Parietal and Visceral Branches of the Abdominal Aorta International Journal of Morphology
Unver Dogan,Nadire; Fazliogullari,Zeliha; Yilmaz,Mehmet Tugrul; Uysal,Ismihan Ilknur; Cicekcibasi,Aynur Emine; Ulusoy,Mahinur; Gunaslan,Pervin.
Variations in the branches of the abdominal aorta were determined during a routine abdominal region dissection of a 70-year-old male cadaver. Left gastric artery arose as the first root from antero-lateral of aorta. Coeliacomesenteric trunk occurred as a thick root. After 29.9mm, coeliacomesenteric trunk bifurcated as coeliac trunk and superior mesenteric artery. Coeliac trunk bifurcated as splenic artery and common hepatic artery. These multiple variations which change the normal anatomic structure of the abdominal aorta have to be kept in mind by surgeons, radiologists and anatomists.

A Computed Tomographic Study of Umbilical Anatomy: The Relationship between Umbilical Thickness and Diameter International Journal of Morphology
Kim,Maru; Oh,Seong-Taek.
Laparoscopic surgeries were first introduced in the 1980s. More recently, similar techniques such as natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery and other advanced transumbilical surgeries have been developed. With all of these surgical advances, basic information about the umbilicus is lacking. This study evaluated the relationship between umbilical diameter and thickness, as well as the underlying vessels, in order to develop a simple means of assessing umbilical anatomy. We retroactively reviewed 842 computed tomography images that included the umbilicus. Umbilical thickness, diameter, type of vessel located beneath the umbilicus, depth to the vessel, and other parameters were measured. Age and sex were noted, and their relationship was analyzed as...

A Different Origin of the Right Gastro-omental Artery International Journal of Morphology
Okamura,Aldo; Alvarez,Daniela; Genovez,Paula; Caldeira,Eduardo José; da Cunha,Marcelo Rodrigues; Carvalho,Cesar Alexandre Fabrega.
The gastro-omental artery is one of the branches of the common hepatic artery. Alterations in the embryonic development of the ventral splanchnic arteries can cause marked variations. A rare variant of the right gastro-omental artery was observed during dissection of a 50-year-old male cadaver. The occurrence of this variant has not been reported in the specialized literature. This case of a different origin of the gastro-omental artery is described in detail in order to provide information that may contribute to upper abdominal surgeries.

A Model for the Estimation of Personal Stature from the Length of Forearm International Journal of Morphology
Ilayperuma,Isurani; Nanayakkara,Ganananda; Palahepitiya,Nadeeka.
Prediction of stature from incomplete and decomposing skeletal remains is vital in establishing the identity of an unknown individual. It has been stated that a variety of factors such as race, gender and nutrition play an important role in determining the height of an individual. Estimation of stature from measurements of various long bones has been achieved with varying degree of accuracy. Those studies resulted in establishing different formulae for the estimation of stature for the respective populations. However, evidence shows that there is a great void in such norms for Sri Lankans. Hence, this study was designed to investigate the relationship and to propose a gender and age specific linear regression models between the ulna length and height of an...

A Morphological Study of the Dorsum Sellae in Human Skull International Journal of Morphology
Haider,Syed Javed; Rezigalla,Assad Ali; Abdalla,Asim Mohammed.
Anatomical variations in the shape and dimension of the dorsum sellae and posterior clinoid process are common. Most textbooks describe its shape as a median rectangular plate, a square plate, or a transverse ledge on a slope behind the sella turcica (hypophyseal fossa). This work aims to study the dorsum sellae of human skull. One hundred and twenty five dried adult human skulls, irrespective of age, were used for the study. Detailed features of the dorsum sellae were noted and classified into five types: crest like, thin plate, frail quadrilateral plate, heavy square plate, thick elongated plate. Fusion of the posterior and middle clinoid processes in one (unilateral) and all the clinoid processes (anterior, middle, and posterior) in three skulls...

Villarreal-Silva,Eliud Enrique; Hinojosa Amaya,José Miguel; Bazaldua Cruz,Juan José; Martínez Fernández,David; Elizondo-Omaña,Rodrigo Enrique; Guzmán López,Santos.
Extraocular muscles are important references in strabismus surgery and in placement of intraorbital devices. We analyzed extraocular muscles morphometry and possible anatomical variances of 20 orbits. We report the length, width, and points of insertion of the extraocular muscles. No anatomical variations in length, width and points of insertion were found. With regard to the rectus muscles, it was found that the superior rectus and lateral rectus are the longest muscles and that the width difference between the superior and inferior rectus is greater than that between the medial and lateral rectus and that the point of insertion of the rectus muscles has a variable morphology. The superior oblique muscle was smaller in caliber than the inferior oblique,...

Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAI) is a clinical entity that has been recognized in recent years as a frequent cause of pain and the early development of hip arthrosis. Subspine hip impingement is characterized by the prominent or abnormal morphology of the anteroinferior iliac spine (AIIS), which contributes to the development of a clinical picture that is similar to FAI. The aims of this study were to propose a new morphological classification of the AIIS, to determine the prevalence of the different AIIS morphologies based on this classification and to correlate the presence of said morphologies with different gender and age groups. The sample consisted of 458 hemipelvises from individuals of known age and sex (264 men and 194 women). Each...

A New Quantitative Method for Predicting Forensic Racial Identity Based on Dental Morphological Trait Analysis International Journal of Morphology
Alsoleihat,Firas.
Few previous studies have demonstrated the likelihood of using the worldwide patterns of dental morphological variation in prediction of ancestry in the context of forensic dental anthropology. This paper introduces a new quantitative method for predicting forensic racial identity of individual specimens based on dental morphological trait analysis. In this study, the inter-population variation in the expression frequency of 16 non-metric tooth crown traits, manifested on the permanent dentition, was used for analysis. The method was developed from the notion that dental morphological characteristics, when viewed as sets of traits rather than isolated variables, can be utilized to calculate the relative probability that an individual belongs to a...

A New Statistical Method for Comparative Anatomy International Journal of Morphology
Aversi-Ferreira,Tales Alexandre.
Rules, formulas and statistical tests have been widely used in studies that use continuous variables in the normal or Gaussian distribution or other tests whose data fit this type of distribution (t and z distributions) and whose parameters can be defined. However, there are cases in which the model and goal of the scientific work allow only the use of discrete or nominal variables. The absence or presence of a structure or organ (muscles, nerves, blood vessels, bones, and ligaments), characteristics associated with these organs, such as the source of nerves, vessels and muscles and the distribution of nerves and vessels are discrete and / or nominal variables that do not fit the Gaussian distribution, nor of z or t, unless the measures of these structures...

A Novel Method for Localizing Nerve Entry Points During Spasticity Treatment International Journal of Morphology
Yang,Shengbo; Hu,Shuangjiang; Tian,Xufeng; Hu,Shuaiyu.
The nerve entry points (NEPs) cannot be accurately localized for the treatment of muscle spasticity in neurolysis. The aim of this study was to develop a new method of accurately localizing nerve entry points in relation to bony landmarks. NEPs in human cadavers were coated with barium sulfate. Method 1 consisted of horizontal and longitudinal reference lines being designated based on bony landmarks, followed by radiography and measurements using picture archiving and communication system software. Method 2 involved sewing the barium sulfate-soaked suture thread into the skin to designate the horizontal and longitudinal reference lines, followed by computed tomography (CT) scanning to determine the skin surface location and puncture depth for the NEPs....

A Novel Path of Communication from Kidney to the Adrenal Gland in Bactrian Camels (Camelus bactrianus) International Journal of Morphology
Ye,Wenling; Wang,Fengling; Lv,Shuangyu; Wang,Yange; Dong,Shuo; Wang,Jianlin.
The adrenal gland is an important endocrine organ in vertebratesthat produces a wide variety of hormones. The anatomical results showed that the adrenal gland in Bactrian camel had a typical blood supply and innervation. Surprisingly, we found that there was a novel connection mainly consisted of fibrous tissue, blood vessels and nerve bundles between the adrenal gland and the kidney in Bactrian camel, and we named it fibrous tissue-blood vessels-nerve bundles (FBN bundle). To the best of our knowledge, this FBN bundle was the first reported in Bactrian camel, and not yet observed in other animals. While, its functions and mechanisms should be studied further. We speculated that a direct function of this novel path might be to strengthen the communication...
